Congratulations to the eight puppies that recently completed a A Beginner Course for Dogs at the clinic. All puppies (and owners) made great progress throughout the puppy training program and learnt valuable skills such as eye contact, sit, drop, settle on mat, walk on a loose lead, and stay. Puppies also learnt that the vet clinic can be a happy place full of treats and fun where they can socialise with others. Their owners even learnt a few things about health and husbandry, what to do with undesirable behaviours (such as jumping up, mouthing, and digging), how to prepare their puppies for vet visits, and environmental enrichment. If you have a puppy between 6 weeks and 6 months of age, or are planning on getting a puppy in the coming weeks, then A Beginner Course for Dogs is the MUST DO course for you. Don’t be caught out by getting the wrong advice or leaving training too late. You’ll get much better results with less frustration and work if you have the correct knowledge and use the most up-to-date training methods from the start. The Kangaroo Island Veterinary Clinic has partnered with Animal Behaviour Coaching to help you teach your puppy to have good manners and be well-socialised in a variety of situations. Founder and director of Animal Behaviour Coaching, Dr. Emma Vermeeren (nee Johnsson) is a veterinarian specialising in animal behaviour and a qualified dog trainer who guides the staff at the Clinic in all matters training and behaviour-related. Setting you and your puppy off on the right paw, A Beginner Course for Dogs will ensure you and your puppy enjoy a lifetime of happiness together. The Course uses force-free training techniques, primarily positive reinforcement, to teach your puppy the desired behaviours. Positive reinforcement is when a pleasant consequence is added to the situation to increase the likelihood of the desired behaviour. Examples of positive reinforcers for dogs include food, play, and petting. You will learn how to associate these reinforcers with a bridge (eg clicker) to aid in rapid and effective training. A Beginner Course for Dogs includes 6.5 hours of contact time spread between self-directed learning online, live with an instructor at Clinic*, and live online with the Animal Behaviour Coaching team. In addition, each puppy receives a training clicker* and a certificate & gift* upon completion. Owners can expect individual feedback and advice, handouts to accompany each puppy skill and education topic, videos to assist with training at home, and references to further resources if interested. Animal Behaviour Coaching has improved the way they are delivering dog training courses. Self-directed online modules enable you to learn and train your dog at your own pace in the comfort of your own home. You can start, pause, and stop whenever you like, making this a flexible way to train your dog without distractions. It is also the best environment for you to listen to the education topics that I believe all puppy owners must know. Live practical classes allow you to socialise your puppy to the Clinic, as well as to meet new people and dogs. It also teaches your puppy to listen to your instructions with real-life distractions, and enables hands-on help from your instructor. Live online classes give you the opportunity to ask any difficult training or behavioural questions whereas the closed Facebook group connects you with other puppy owners completing the same training course, giving you support and providing a safe place to ask questions and share successes. What more could you want out of a training course?!

I would recommend every puppy owner attend puppy school. The reading material and training videos are so helpful; I refer to them often.” ~Joanne “The content of the course was excellent; really enjoyed it. Within a short space of time, I have seen a massive improvement in my dog’s behaviour. The course also gave me the skills I need to train my dog in my home.
